6 Thriller Dramas That Will Have You Hooked

After binge-watching endless hours of romcom dramas. I went into a drama slump. I read countless synopsis and watched a lot of trailers but nothing looked worth watching. Besides the popular romantic K-dramas and melodramas, South Korea also creates thriller series that will lead to your heart beating with anticipation. Kdrama thrillers have a certain nuance that isn't seen on any English dramas.

I really wish people wouldn't prejudice against Kdramas or any dramas that aren't in English. Subtitles are always available on all platforms. This is coming from someone who watched her first kdrama in 2006 and hasn't stopped since. Please give kdramas a chance if they pique your interest. They really are worth it, you won't regret it.

Here's a list of my recent favourite thrillers dramas that will surely leave you feeling intrigued and will have you on the edge of your seat.

Psychopath Diary

Hilarious, suspenseful, psychological. "Psychopath Diary" is the story of Yook Dong Sik who coincidentally picks up the diary of a serial killer. The suspense is incredible, the humour comes in all forms (dark, light, goofy, sarcastic), the plot comes with many little conflicts that all intertwine in a brilliant way to back up the main conflict, and every single character is portrayed so well with much character depth and great acting skills. My favourite drama of 2019-2020. If only i could erase my memory, just to enjoy it all over again, i would. (Available on Rakutenviki)

The Voice

There was a new case, every episode. "The Voice" has 3 seasons. Every case was so different yet they all were connected in some way. Detective Jin-Hyuk and Kang Kwon-Joo solve cases together. Chasing a serial killer responsible for the deaths of their family member. The cases were like puzzles that in the end revealed the whole picture. Haunting OST to listen to. Season one is my absolute favourite, Interesting storylines, characters, and an amazing villain.  (Available on Netflix)

Train

If you can't already tell, Yoon Shi Yoon is one of my absolute favourite actors. Yoon Shi Yoon's acting really comes through "Train" he's an amazing and underrated actor. I loved the dark and atmospheric filming. A sci-fi melodrama about a man who tries to protect his beloved from a serial killer in a parallel universe. This drama has everything you can ask for in a thriller. It has the right dosage of suspense, a slight bit of horror and a dash of heartfelt scenes. He acting was so realistic and the cast played their role with utmost perfection.

He Is Psychometric

Refreshing' is the first word that comes to mind when attempted to describe "He Is Psychometric'' a single word. Lee Ahn who is able to read the secrets of those whose skin comes into contact with him, and Yoon Jaein who does everything she can to hide her pain. In the drama, the boy and girl will meet and try to fix, heal, grow, and love from the small and big occurrences that happen in their lives. However, it counteracts these deficiencies in the treatment of the story and its characters. Like most dramas it has its boy meets girl cliches, but the treatment of these cliches is done brilliantly. It also presents not one but two self-reliant female leads who can and does kick ass just as much as the male protagonists. (Available on Netflix)

Stranger/Forest Of Secret

For someone who is barely able to finish season 1 of dramas. I binged watched both two seasons of Stranger back to back. This is the best political psychological thriller I've seen so far. The show keeps you hooked from start till the end with no brakes. Lives up to its name and doesn't force the protagonists into useless romance in the middle of all that was happening! All the actors are superb. No wasted meaningless scenes. The main character is quite intriguing. Cho Seung-Wood does a fine job at portraying prosecutor Hwang Shi-Mok. This show is so unpredictable. Many scenarios throw you off when new speculations, questions and events are raised. I especially love how the story depicts Hwang. He is unable to feel emotion, because of this, he is able to carry out his investigations without any bias which makes him a fair prosecutor, but we also get to see the flaws of his condition as the story progresses. Probably one of the best cast so far. Everyone does brilliantly in portraying their characters. The creator should consider a third season..dramas of this calibre don't come that often.  (Available on Netflix)

Tunnel

Detective Park Gwang-ho follows the trail of a serial killer 30 years into the future and teams up with detectives in that time period to find the culprit. He goes from walking along the ridges of rice paddies for clues in 1986, straight into 2016. The way matched the time travel medium, crime scenes and main lead frustrated scenes left me agape. Though some scenes are a catastrophe, the drama was awesome. Definitely something refreshing. I didn’t watch the trailer nor read the synopsis before watching it so I was genuinely surprised how they managed to include the time travel element in a crime kdrama. This series has an unusually smart plot. What is also unusual for a thriller is that the suffering of the families of the victims is much more central to the story than usual. A bit slow in the end but definitely worth watching! (Available on Netflix)

Most of the dramas mentioned here were suggested to me! And I really liked them. Hope you enjoy them too. Let me know in the comments if you watched any dramas mentioned above or which one has piqued your interest!
